Socioeconomic Issues
An overview
Numerous socioeconomic losses will be suffered if Site C and its reservoir are given government approval. Many of these losses are priceless and irreplaceable. No dollar value has been assessed by BC Hydro for such invaluable resources. Details on some of these losses have been broken down into four main categories:
History: dinosaur remains, First Nations' ancestral grounds, fur trade artifacts and pioneer lands
Industry: oil, gas, petroleum, construction, agriculture and tourism, for example
Residential: First Nations' traditional camps, farming families and others
Recreation: camping, hunting, fishing, water sports, wildlife viewing/photography, etc.
What makes these losses even worse is when the domestic demand does not even come close to justifying them.
BC Hydro has made predictions of increased domestic demand but their own data does not suppport these predictions. Please see the following analysis of domestic demand based on BC Hydro's own data here.
